How the pieces move
  • Pawn — moves one square diagonally forward (to an empty square), captures one square straight forward, and may advance two straight forward on its first move.
  • Bishop / Rook — slide normally, and may also jump the first piece in a line to land on the very next square (capturing there or landing empty).
  • Knight — travels like a rook (clear path, any distance) then steps one square to the side. It can no longer jump.
  • Queen / King — move normally; each projects a 3×3 zone that no enemy jumping piece may land in (your own jumps pass through freely). The king can also castle normally.
